Borderlands 4 Below the Surface Starting Location

This quest icon appears on your map after unfogging the area near it, and will also be displayed on the compass at the top of your screen from a distance. After discovering it, place a waypoint to be guided to the starting location in the north of Dominion's Terminus District. There you'll find Ted standing in a tunnel who will offer you the mission.

Borderlands 4 Below the Surface Objectives Guide

1. Take Key Card

After conversing with Ted, he'll offer you a keycard. Accept it to proceed with the mission.

2. Use Key Card to Access Lab / Enter Lab

Follow your quest marker to the designated door, use the key card to unlock it, and head inside the facility.

3. Use Elevator / Reach Facility's Sub-Level Access

Step onto the elevator in the middle of the first room. When it doesn't work, look for a vent cover on the wall to the left of where you entered. Pull it open and proceed through the air duct behind it.

4. Jump Down

Follow the corridor until you reach a point where you must drop down to continue deeper into the facility.

5. Reach Labs / Listen to Log (Optional)

Follow the linear path through the lab until you climb out of the water. As soon as you land in the room above the water, you'll find the 1st of 5 ECHO logs on a table in front of you.

Proceed through the next corridor and go through the wall opening. In the next room is a locked door with a blue quest marker. In the room to the right, pull open another vent cover to find the 2nd ECHO log.

Interact with the marked gate (get close to see the prompt). After going through, check the left corner to find the 3rd ECHO log in a broken window.

6. Clear Creep Infestation

Use a grapple point to jump into the main lab where you'll need to defeat all the insect enemies that have infested the area.

7. Reactivate Elevator

After clearing the enemies, use the console upstairs on the right side of the room to reactivate the elevator.

8. Wait for Ted

Head back to the start of the room. More insect enemies will appear shortly.

9. Kill Vile Experiments

Defeat all the new enemies in the room. Two are "vile" variants with purple crystals that protect them from damage. Destroy the purple crystals first, then quickly shoot the little purple orbs flying around them to prevent the crystals from regenerating.

10. Talk to Ted

After defeating the enemies, Ted will enter the room. Speak with him, and watch as he steps into the purple machine in the middle of the room and transforms into a monster.

11. Kill CorrupTed

Defeat Ted's corrupted form. He will drop the 4th ECHO log upon defeat - make sure to pick it up.

12. Reach Elevator

Exit the room through the gate behind the purple machine that Ted used. Go through the next corridor, and in the room with the elevator switch, you'll find the 5th ECHO log on the right side at the start of the room, on the floor next to a corpse.

13. Leave Facility

Press the elevator switch and exit the building to complete the mission.

Completing "Below the Surface" grants you XP, monetary rewards, a potential Green or Purple shotgun, and two cosmetic items: the Weirdo Vehicle Paintjob and Weirdo Weapon Skin.
